Southeast Reno Internet business starts new Web site

Posted Sunday, March 25th, 2007

RGJ.com The Reno Gazette-Journal reports on MuttMart.corn, a southeast Reno-based company that sells dog food and supplies.  MuttMart is adding
www.MyCatMart.com this week.

Sites for bird, fish and ferret items are coming in the next few months, owner Justin Hertz said. “We’re venturing into the feline arena,” Hertz said. “We’ve done so well with MuttMart that we decided to venture out into other animal categories.”

Hertz started MuttMart.com in 2002 and moved to Reno in 2004. Then’ is no retail store at its East Patriot Boulevard office so most customers shop for items online or by phone.  “We warehouse the majority of it (merchandise) in back and deal with a handful of companies that are drop shippers - giant warehouses that ship orders,” Hertz said.

Rawhide dog bones and antibark collars are the best selling items, along with pet drinking fountains that are plugged in and circulate water similar to fountains, he said.

Before starting MuttMart. com, Hertz said he sourced leather goods for shoe repair and manufacturing and found that some tanneries produced rawhide dog bones. He got some rawhide samples, then started his own line of rawhide bones in 2000 and sold them wholesale to more than 1,000 pet stores nationwide.

Hertz then entered the direct to consumer market in 2002 and expanded his business. He now has 25,000 customers from around the nation in his database; close to half of them are repeat customers. There are five people working tor him doing customer service, processing orders and other duties.

“We have exceeded 100 percent growth every year and sales exceed $100,000 per month,” said Hertz, who has three miniature Australian shepherd dogs.
