UNLV launches entertainment engineering major

University of Nevada, Las VegasSetting up a harness for an acrobat to fly across a stage soon will become a scholarly pursuit.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas recently launched an engineering major for the entertainment industry.clip_image0012

University officials said the new bachelor’s degree program is the only one like it in the country.

Students will have internships at Cirque du Soleil shows, working on everything from pulley systems to moving stages.

Jobs for people with such training are plentiful and lucrative, industry insiders said.

“We’re constantly on the lookout for people with these types of skills,” said Tony Ricotta, manager of “O,” at the Bellagio.

RGJ.comThe program’s leaders are looking for high school students who excel in both mathematics and the arts.

The courses will be very hands-on, with students learning such skills as metalworking and woodworking to create artistic structures. Read more:

Rural Summit Wraps Up in Fallon

The 2007 Rural Summit in Fallon wrapped today with a series of speakers and panels. Governor Jim Gibbons gave a very interesting speech focusing on the issues surrounding Nevada’s energy situation, and laid out the opportunities for economic development focused on renewable energy resources.

The Governor was followed by presentations by NCED’s Tim Rubald, a Rural Legislative Review, and wrapped up with a panel discussion on Community Development, Redevelopment and Grant Funding.

Go green with bottleless water

The quality and sources of commercially bottled water is a big topic these days, conversation circulating around office water coolers should perhaps shift toward the dispensers themselves. The Good Water Co. could only be so fortunate.
The Las Vegas-based water purification systems dealer/developer announced this month a product that does away with the plastic bottle completely. Dubbed The Hydration Station, it is a bottleless cooler that attaches directly to a building’s water supply to vend purified water at a cost competitive with traditional cooler providers.

It is the follow-up to Good Water’s home purification system, Pure-O-Flow, and the second in a line of reverse osmosis products. Not to mention, Good Water execs predict annual revenue will quadruple within a few years. Reverse osmosis is recognized as a superior means of purifying water, although only recently has technology made it economically feasible. Read more:
