RTYPN partners with Web site

Posted Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Reno Tahoe Young Professionals Network partnered with coolpeoplecare.org, a philanthropic Web site that reminds members to make a difference – in five minutes or less – via daily email reminder.

The network also plans to send monthly reports on committee work to its membership base of 300, says Janet Buckley, member of the leadership committee.

Community service is a prime component of the network, she adds. The group chooses one charity each year. This year the group encouraged members to turn out for a benefit concert in Wingfield Park that solicits donations for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Next year, she says, it may be the American Red Cross.

Renewable and sustainable energy jobs could be key to future economic diversification

Posted Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Las Vegas does a fantastic job of attracting tourists and has positioned itself as a world-class city with extensive foreign connections, a UNLV report on economic diversification said.

But now the city needs to use that power to bring businesses and creative people “from all walks of life and destinations” to strengthen the region’s economy, the recently published report concluded.

“Southern Nevada has an enormous opportunity to capitalize on the strength, natural resources and capabilities of our region by diversifying our economy,” the Lied Institute for Real Estate Studies said in its 21-page report. “We cannot rely upon the success and progress of the gaming industry alone for a vibrant future.”

Participants of roundtable discussions held in August said Southern Nevada residents should “engage in a visionary process” to determine what needs to be changed to strengthen the economy through diversification. Read full story:

Las Vegas: Leader in sustainability?

Posted Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Las Vegas Sun

Perhaps the last place you would look for leadership on sustainability: the city that’s a monument to consumerism, a model of urban sprawl, a water-guzzling man-made oasis in a desert.

But that’s just what Las Vegas is looking to be – a thought leader when it comes to living and growing without depleting resources that future generations will need .

And UNLV, which last week hosted 400 academics and community leaders at a conference on the topic, wants to place itself at the center of the conversation.

Last week’s event, Shaping the Future of Southern Nevada: Economic, Environmental and Social Sustainability, was the first of what the university hopes will be twice-annual conferences. The gathering was meant in part to help stakeholders develop a better understanding of what sustainability is. University of Nevada, Las VegasFuture conferences will focus on more narrow topics such as water consumption. Read more:

Renown confident that difference will be found in details

Posted Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

(NCET is offering a behind-the-scenes tour of the new Renown Tower on Friday, Nov 2 at 5:30.  More info here.)

Details, details.

That’s what Renown Health officials hope will set their

10-story Tahoe Tower apart from other hospitals when the newest addition to Renown Regional Medical Center opens this week.

Some are obvious, given the high levels of cleanliness a hospital requires.

Other details are more subtle, aimed at patient comfort. Renown went so far as to build a mock hospital room and have staffers go through and post sticky-notes to suggest improvements.

RGJ.comA common thread is efficiency. Renown officials use the phrase “hospital within a hospital” to describe the Tahoe Tower’s layout designed to speed up treatment and eliminate long distances.

The public will get a chance to inspect Renown’s Tahoe Tower on Wednesday, Senior Day, and next Sunday, Community Day, before patients begin filling rooms starting Nov. 12.

Some details to notice:

Admissions. Nothing clinical here; you’ll feel like you’re checking into an upscale hotel.

“Healing arts” is the message: Sculptures and other local artwork, aquariums, fountains, abundant natural sunlight, live plants and other soothing amenities adorn the entry corridor.

“It’s been shown that art helps with health care,” said Newton Chase, director of facilities.

Surgery. A total of 33 pre-surgery rooms await with extra privacy curtains and seating for family/friends.

In this age of resistant germs, six rooms are “negative pressure,” where air flows in continuously as an infection control measure.
