Description:

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs represent the largest source of early-stage funding for high-tech start-up companies in the United States. These federally-mandated programs provide more than $2 billion every year to small, for-profit companies to carry out leading-edge high-risk research and to grow their businesses. More than 40% of these funds are awarded to companies with 10 or fewer employees and much of the money goes to companies with just 1-3 employees. Nearly 1/3 of the awards go to first-time winners every year.

NSBDC is offering a workshop, led by Dr. Fritz Grupe, to provide attendees with an overview of the programs and how businesses that can develop their own, unique hardware and software products can submit proposals to compete for these funds. This workshop will not benefit operators of retail stores, franchises, services and the like. You are invited to contact Dr. Grupe for information about these programs at any time (775-813-7407).

Posted Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Frank Yoder Jr. has been captivated by computers since he first laid hands on the keys of the clunky TI-99 he picked up in 1982. His intrinsic attraction to hardware and software ultimately cemented his professional aspirations.

“I fell in love with computers early on and knew that was what I wanted to do the first time I stayed up all night writing a program on this little, tiny clip_image0011computer that had 2K memory and no storage device, so as soon as you ran the program it was gone forever,” said Yoder, president and founder of Advanced Information Systems (AIS), an IT solutions company. “I stayed up until I ran out of memory, and I never got to run that program, but I knew I was hooked. I was lost.”

Yoder, who has a degree in computer science, also has the entrepreneurial bug, which he inherited from his father, who owned myriad businesses from a mortgage brokerage to a bakery to a Christmas tree lot. Read full story:
