The Nevada Inventor’s Association is composed of 76 members in a wide range of professions with various levels of success related to patents and innovation. Each monthly meeting is filled with an agenda that includes association business, networking, professional training on the business of product and service innovation, visits by special guest speakers, Q&A and “show and tell,” and impromptu presentations by inventors, members, guests and supporting vendors. Entrepreneur expo spawns workshop series

Nevada’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology and the Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division of Truckee Meadows Community College will launch a “Best of the NCET Entrepreneurial Expo” series of workshops.

The 14-class series, based on presentations at the NCET Entrepreneurial Expo this month, will run from 6 to 9 p.m. at TMCC’s Meadowood Center, in Reno, starting May 12.

Among the speakers will be David Branby, owner of a Reno ad agency; Richard Normington, who has more than 30 years of management experience with Fortune 100 companies; David Leonard, senior area manager for the U.S. Small Business Administration; and Jarrod Lopiccolo, chief executive officer of Noble Studios, a web development company.

The series is broken into a basic and advanced track, and entrepreneurs can pay $295 to attend all 14 sessions, or $50 to attend a single workshop.

What: The American Solar Energy Society’s National Solar Tour, showcasing Las Vegas homes with solar panels.

When: April 5, starting at 9 a.m.

Where: Pick up a tour guidebook at Springs Preserve, 333 S. Valley View Blvd. The self-guided tour closes at 4 p.m.

Tickets: $15, or $10 for those driving hybrid vehicles. Advance registration is required.

DRI names Gerrard Technologist Employee of the Year

A committee of her peers at the Desert Research Institute has awarded Jo Gerrard in the Division of Atmospheric Sciences, the Technologist Employee of the Year.clip_image001

Teen masters gather for a robot rodeo

Everyone knows that robots are plotting behind our backs to overthrow humanity. For decades we’ve been warned, in comic books and anime and sci-fi books and movies.clip_image002

As you read this, the teenage power-nerds of America are busily designing our future android overlords — and winning prizes and scholarships for it.

Proudly, defiantly geeky, this next generation of evil geniuses — and their deceptively ingenuous inventions — invaded the unwitting city of Las Vegas this week, as UNLV’s College of Engineering played host to more than 1,200 high school students participating in the fourth annual FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition.
