Clark County School District going high-tech

Clark County School Board members, get ready for your close-ups.In preparation for the switch to live video broadcasting of Clark County School Board meetings, Vegas PBS staff members have been taping the board at work so they can make recommendations. Producer/directors Mark Williams, left, and Kevin Robinson work the equipment that will be used to record the meetings. The School District has spent about $125,000 on equipment for the chamber and another $12,000 in staff time on the project, which goes live for the first time in August.

After lengthy delays, the School Board plans to begin broadcasting its meetings live on the Internet beginning with the start of the academic year in August.

Plans are also in the works to air reruns on one of the two educational channels shared by Vegas PBS, UNLV and CSN. Read more:

New Pebble Project aimed at area’s young professionals- JUL 2

The Reno-Tahoe Young Professionals Network will launch the Pebble Project from 5:30 to 7 p.m. July 2 at the future Nevada Discovery Museum. Reno Tahoe YPN Young Professionals Network

Each quarterly Pebble Project event is designed to help members learn about board, committee and volunteer opportunities in local nonprofit and government organizations. Representatives will meet members who want to get involved.

The theme of the first of quarterly Pebble Project events will be Arts and Special Events.

Janitorial contractors take steps to go green

Janitorial companies in northern Nevada slowly are paying more attention to the use of environmentally friendly products and practices, but the change is coming slowly.

The hangup? Janitorial products designed to be environmentally friendly often are more expensive than traditional products, and building owners generally don’t want to pay the extra.

The pressure to go green often comes from tenants that rent space in office and commercial properties, says Brittany Diehl, who manages 10 properties in her role as assistant director of property management for Nevada Commercial Services Inc. in Reno. Read full story:

FORBES RANKS LAS VEGAS THE NO. TWO BEST CITY FOR JOBS IN 2008

While the U.S. economy continues to be sluggish at best, Las Vegas continues to shine as
a city for future growth, job stability and opportunity. Forbes recently ranked Las Vegasimage
the number two best city on its “Best And Worst Cities For Jobs” 2008 list. While the
article pointed to sliding housing markets and foreclosure problems in the top ranked
cities including Las Vegas, Forbes related, “There is hope, though, especially for job
prospects in Las Vegas, Phoenix and Riverside.”1 Chief economist for Economy.com
Mark Zandi said, “These are fundamentally solid economies and should rebound
strongly….Considering the number of jobs coming online in the next few years in the gaming and non-gaming sectors, the Las Vegas housing market and economy in general look
promising for the future.

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS AND STUDENTS GAIN HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE IN NANOTECHNOLOGY AT UNLV

Science teachers and students from four area high schools gained hands on experience in the emerging field of nanotechnology June 24-27 as part of the Nanotechnology Summer Institute (NSI) at UNLV.  Under the direction of Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering professor Biswajit Das, the NSI provided an overview of nanotechnology and its applications and provide hands-on instruction in the laboratories of the Nevada Nanotechnology Center (NNC).
