Young professionals group seeks director

Reno Tahoe Young Professionals Network burst onto the scene in the spring of 2007 withReno Tahoe YPN Young Professionals Network a flurry of members. And while it retains a base of about 300, it’s been less successful in retaining leadership. The group is now seeking its next executive director — a paid, full-time position. The suggested age range is 21 to 39 and the Web site is renotathoeypn.com.

Cut the smog: Trade-in program starts for gasoline mowers

Twenty-one neatly stacked lawn mowers in a North Las Vegas junkyard are easy to overlook amid towering metal scrap heaps and hundreds of cast-off engines.

But air quality officials would say that scrapping this modest number of gasoline mowers will put a noticeable dent in ozone pollution.

And they hope that 1,000 people will swap their gasoline-driven mowers for battery-powered ones, reducing low-lying ozone substantially in the valley during the hot summer months when the pollutant is the most intense. Read full story:

Old computer, new resource

Fifteen years ago, Disability Resources was established to help members with developmental problems learn to live independently, manage money and cook and clean.The nonprofit photoagency always was looking for the best way to raise money to fund these functions and to keep the doors open at their small Sparks office.

In 2000, the board of directors began looking for opportunities to generate that income. Grant money had become difficult to get, but Aimee Wittler, the executive director at the time, saw a need in the community for computer recycling. Starting out in a small room at their headquarters, agency members began taking in old computers and refurbishing and recycling them. Read more:

Nevada panel set to study renewable transmission development

Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons signed Thursday an executive order creating a second phase

State of Nevada

of his Renewable Energy Transmission Access Advisory Committee, which last year identified 14 transmission corridors needed to bring renewable energy to key markets. Gibbons now is asking the committee to determine the power potential for the state’s renewable energy zones, identify routes that can handle immediate power line construction, determine the cost and revenue for possible lines and address possible financing mechanisms. He called for a final report from the committee by July 31, 2009.

EDAWN, 16 companies set to recruit Bay Area workers

The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada and 16 major employers from the region will launch an effort to recruit skilled professionals from the San Francisco Bay Area. EDAWN: Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada

The companies and the economic development agency will host a recruitment event, “Beers and Careers with Reno/Tahoe,” Thursday at the Ferry Building in San Francisco.

The event targets Bay Area skilled professionals who are 30 or older and interested in a balanced lifestyle.

The pitch: The Reno-Tahoe area allows professionals to have a good career while enjoying affordable housing, outdoor recreation and easy commutes, said Gail Conkey, director of marketing for EDAWN. Read full story.
