United Construction Co. is going for the gold as it breaks ground on a headquarters in Reno that its top executives hope will be recognized for its environmentally friendly workplace.
The contractor is submitting the 12,350-square-foot building on Mill Street near McCarran Boulevard to the U.S. Green Building Council for its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, gold certification.
That would make the building, after inspection upon its completion next winter, the second such designated site in Northern Nevada alongside outdoor clothier Patagonia.
“We feel socially responsible for energy conservation and a healthy environment for our employees,” said Craig Willcut, president of United Construction.
To that end, the $2.2 million building will offer its employees numerous “green” benefits, including:
Every workstation with a view of the outside with natural sunlight providing 95 percent or more of necessary light.
Individual lighting controls at each workstation.
30 percent or more in heating/air-conditioning energy savings.
40 percent-plus savings in indoor water use with low-flow fixtures.
70 percent savings in outdoor water use with turf-less landscaping, drought-resistant plants and a drip watering system only — no sprinklers.
In addition, one-half of the materials from structures demolished to make way for the new building is being recycled, said United Vice President Torbin Schroder, and 20 percent of materials used in the new building is manufactured in this region, cutting down on the transportation impact on the environment.
