Schools’ use of GIS systems wins national recognition

Washoe County School District tied its Geographic Information System with school police wcsd.giffunctions, winning national recognition in the process. Vanessa Simpson, GIS analyst for the school district, loaded the software onto three dispatch computers to provide answers to two questions posed by school police:

The first: Should an incident occur in the community, what schools are within a certain radius of the ruckus? Nearby schools can be locked down, and the students kept inside. Such a situation occurred near McQueen High School a few years back, says Simpson.

And, although daycare centers, charter schools and private schools are not in its jurisdiction, the school district also maps their location so they can be notified as well. Read full story:

NCET CEO named "Who’s Who" in the business community

Demonstrating the growing awareness of the value of entrepreneurial enterprises and technological development in the Silver State, NCET CEO Dave Archer was recently named one of Greater Reno-Tahoe’s “Who’s Who” in the business world by Northern Nevada Business Weekly. Archer was lauded for his ongoing efforts to “build and nurture tech-oriented businesses and develop community and educational ties among sectors.”

Yackira remains bullish on utility’s master plan

The state’s main power utility is working toward energy independence for Nevada, Sierra Biography PhotoPacific Resources President and Chief Executive Michael Yackira said at a Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce luncheon Aug. 13.

Yackira said that although the peak demand for power in Southern Nevada this summer has not spiked to a record high as expected, the southern urban core still uses far more electricity than it can generate.

Southern Nevada’s peak power use this summer was about 5.5 megawatts, slightly lower than last year’s peak, but much higher than it was a decade ago.

The Reno area this year will be almost self-sufficient on electricity because of a large geothermal power plant that recently came on line, Yackira said. Read full story:
