betting your retirement on your start-up
Posted Thursday, October 30th, 2008With small-business loans and second mortgages scarce these days, some middle-age entrepreneurs are starting companies using their retirement savings, a novel financing method that they say avoids loan payments and early withdrawal penalties.![]()
These business owners are effectively treating their start-up ventures as any other stock in their 401(k) portfolio, and in the process they are providing seed capital for their own budding enterprises. In some cases they are even paying themselves a salary as their businesses start generating cash.
It’s a risky strategy, one that has business owners essentially betting their retirement on their company. But beyond that, it is controversial, considering that the same person is serving as financier, chief executive and salaried employee. And because it is all being fueled by pretax retirement dollars, the tax consequences are unclear.
But that has not stopped several advisory firms and hundreds of their clients from promoting it as the ultimate start-up strategy that, during a widespread market crisis, lets you invest in the one thing you have control over: yourself. Read full story:

UNLV’S ISS to host energy security roundtable – Nov 14
Posted Wednesday, October 29th, 2008To introduce its Energy Security Policy Initiative, the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas is hosting the Energy Security Roundtable and Luncheon Nov. 14. The roundtable will feature a panel of international energy policy and
scientific experts including: Lord David Howell, Foreign Policy Spokesman, Conservative Party, United Kingdom; Professor Tatsuo Masuda, adviser to the Chairman of Japan Petroleum Exploration Company; and UNLV Professors Oliver Hemmers and Dennis Pirages. The roundtable is an event open to researchers, educators, students, policy makers, the private sector, and the general public. Space is limited.

About the Event:
The Second Annual Reno Tahoe Young Professionals Network Leadership Summit brings together over 200 Greater Reno-Tahoe business professionals to “Make the Grade” in their personal and professional lives. The Summit’s focus will be on the continuum of learning and connecting to the community. Through learning and connecting with the community young professionals will become more successful in all aspects.
During the day at all refreshment breaks, plan to visit and connect with the many Educational and Youth non-profit organizations in our community who will be a part of this event and support YPN’s partnership with the Pebble Project.
The event kicks off with special guest speaker Darian Rodriguez Heyman, executive director of Craigslist Foundation. Darian will discuss social entrepreneurship and how young professionals can integrate their non-profit work into their corporate models. He looks to inspire collaboration by effectively connecting leaders with their communities.
Following the keynote, attendees will participate in all three breakout sessions which will focus on educational leadership, mentoring, and the green movement.
