In a spare one-room office at Nasa’s Silicon Valley campus, a small band of futurists is Financial Timesplotting to save the world. The means are not a revolutionary technology or a new world order (though both may be byproducts). Rather, a new, pseudo-academic institution called Singularity University is going to solve our grand challenges: poverty, hunger, energy scarcity and climate change. Among others. Through a combination of techno-optimism, wide-eyed idealism and belief in the perfectibility of human beings, these well-connected geeks are creating an institution meant to legitimize their most extreme thinking.

Forgive them for dreaming big. We’re in, after all, the cradle of the personal computer industry, the neighborhood that brought forth Hewlett-Packard, Apple and Intel. The Googleplex is just north of SU’s office, Yahoo’s campus just south. NASA tests the wings of its spacecraft here. Stanford University is up the road. And the Singularity team has landed some of these titans as partners in its endeavor. Read full story:

Reno plans city-wide e-waste recycling event – May 2

Partners from all over the community are joining together to hold another community e-waste recycling event to help residents properly dispose of old electronics.

The City of Reno, New2U Computers, University of Nevada, Reno Department of Environmental Health and Safety, News Channel 2, Whole Foods, and Merlone Geier Partners are joining together with many community sponsors for the e-waste recycling event on May 2 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Park Lane Mall site. Sponsors for the event include Washoe County, Washoe County District Health, Nevada Mining Association, reno.jpgSenator Bill Raggio, Assemblywoman Debbie Smith, Sparks Council Member Julia Ratti, Incline Village GID, and the City of Sparks.

Disposal of household electronics is free. All televisions require a disposal voucher. Vouchers can be purchased in advance for $10 from New2U Computers and Whole Foods, or on the day of the event for $15 at the site. The fees obtained will cover the cost of proper recycling. No appliances can be accepted. Businesses must arrange for pick-up directly through New2U Computers.

In addition to televisions, residents can recycle items such as computers, laptops, monitors, keyboards, cords/cables, power supplies, printers, DVD players, and cell phones. Items that can’t be accepted are microwaves, toasters, blenders, and other similar kitchen appliances. All donations are tax deductible and a receipt will be provided.

Statewide student competition takes care of business

UNLV teams are out to prove that you don’t have to be a business major to get down to business.  Statewide student competition takes care of business

Two UNLV undergraduate teams and one graduate team will compete in the finals for the 5th annual Donald W. Reynolds Governor’s Cup Business Plan Competition on Wednesday, April 22 in Reno.

Winners of the Nevada competition will earn the chance to represent the state and compete against winners of Arkansas and Oklahoma’s Governor’s Cup in the tri-state Reynolds Cup competition. 

Twenty teams will present before a panel of judges to persuade them that their plan has what it takes to be recognized. Last year, a UNLV team placed first in the competition and took home a $20,000 reward. Read full story:

BE co-gen energy plant comes online in Storey Co.

An energy co-generation project in Storey County started up in January is now fully operational, says EP Minerals, LLC. The subsidiary of EaglePicher Corporation of Dearborn, Mich., says the $2 million project will result in a more energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly plant.

The price tag includes land, construction, materials and labor, says a company spokeswoman, as well as engineering, equipment and installation. The firm declined to disclose the payback period.

The Clark plant came online in 1945, and with regular maintenance, should last indefinitely, says EP. The facility employs about 60. Read full story:
