Businesses You Can Start on Your Own

In any economy, a part-time business can bring in extra income, give you a fallback plan if BusinessWeek logoyou lose your job, or plant the seed for a larger venture. In a downturn, it’s hard to argue with preparing a backup plan. Of course, starting a business is always risky, and you will almost surely spend more than you make at first. Business Week recently offered advice for laid-off workers considering going into business for themselves. DEPT. OF AGRICULTURE Rural Business Cooperative Service Soliciting Applications

The Rural Business-Cooperative Service is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) newrdlogo.jpg2009 to purchase renewable energy systems and make energy efficiency improvements and to conduct feasibility studies for renewable energy systems for agriculture producers and rural small businesses in eligible rural areas. Funding will be available in the form of grants and loan guarantees. In addition to grants and loan guarantees, applicants may apply for combination loan guarantee and grant funding.

DATES: Complete applications must be received by the appropriate USDA Rural Development State Office no later than 4:30 local time July 31, 2009. Neither complete nor incomplete applications received after this date and time will be considered, regardless of the postmark on the application. Application materials may be obtained by contacting one of Rural Development’s Rural Energy Coordinators or by downloading through http://www.grants.gov. Submit electronic applications at http://www.grants.gov, following the instructions found on this Web site. To use Grants.gov, all applicants (unless the applicant is an individual) must have a Dun and Bradstreet Data Nevada Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number, which can be obtained at no cost via a toll-free request line at 1–866–705–5711 or online at http:// fedgov.dnb.com/webform. Nevada 4-H Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (S.T.E.M.) Day Camp – July 20-24

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s (UNCE) Lifelong Learning Center is holding a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) day camp from July 20-24. The day University of Nevada Renocamp, open to youth between the ages of 12-15, will include activities in basic sciences, nutrition science, alternative energy, GPS/GIS, digital camera, robotics and rocketry.

Youth participants will get to build and race a robot, build and launch straw and paper rockets, as well as build an Estes rocket to take home. Other activities include building an altimeter and hands-on experiments with alternative energy.

UNCE Lifelong Learning Center is located at 8050 Paradise Road (at I-215 and Windmill Lane). Cost of the day camp is $140 and includes lunch and activities.  For more information contact Tera Robinson at 702-257-5524 or e-mail robinsont@unce.unr.edu.

Tech Unemployment Bad, but Not That Bad

Earlier this month, hard drive maker Seagate became the latest tech firm to announce layoffs:Fast Company Logo 1100 cuts, or 2.5% of its workforce. But while unemployment in the technology sector accelerated in the first quarter of 2009, according to projections by the IEEE in a report published this week, it will pale in comparison to the job losses following the collapse of the tech bubble in 2001.
