Look Ma, No Wires

Posted Friday, July 31st, 2009

Eric Giler of Witricity demonstrated a wondrous magic trick: the ability to power an LCD screen and three different cellphones using no wires. “Let’s face it, wires suck,” Giler said at TEDGlobal. “Batteries also suck.” The day is coming when Witricity’s technology, known as resonant energy, or technologies closely related to it, will allow us to chuck those annoying tethers and cut way back on the 40 million disposable batteries manufactured every year.

Witricity’s technology involves running high-frequency, alternating current into one magnetic coil and tuning a nearby coil to the exact same frequency. This allows the coils to couple their magnetic fields and share power. It’s not dangerous. Giler has had requests for his technology from all the usual suspects, such as consumer electronics makers, the military and medical devices manufacturers, and he’s also had interest from a company that makes electrically heated dog bowls. Commentary: Having passion for a profession pays off during a recession

Posted Friday, July 31st, 2009

Joe Wong is a realist. Even though he did extensive research before opening the Green Onion in south Reno in early 2008, he realized that his soup and salad bar restaurant wasn’t going

to make it. He attracted a good lunch crowd, but when the economy nose-dived, his target market for dinner, young families, just stopped coming. He had to decide if he was going to stay open and suffer a slow death, or take a risk and change his business in the middle of a recession.

“We looked at what we would change to attract a different market segment,” Joe said. “But it had to be something I could do well. I know how to make great Asian food. Well, my mom knows how to make great Asian food.”

Joe coaxed his mom out of retirement (she ran two Asian restaurants in Colorado) and moved her to Reno where she helped him transition his soup and salad bar into Jade Garden. He also met with his uncle who operates two of the best Asian restaurants in Denver. They compared several menus of Reno restaurants and realized that many items are repeated at every restaurant. We’re pleased to announce that the 2010 NCET Entrepreneur and Small Business Expo will be held on Friday, February 19, 2010 at the South Point Hotel Casino and Spa.

The Entrepreneur and Small Business Expo is designed to provide small businesses — and aspiring business owners — with the advice, resources, contacts and information needed to start or grow a successful business. For 2010, the Expo will feature over 100 exhibitors and a series of 45-minute educational seminars.

However, people told us that they sometimes had to choose between attending the educational sessions and visiting the exhibits. This year, we’re looking for new ways to offer additional seminars at times and days that won’t conflict with the exhibit floor hours.

We’d like your help in selecting the educational seminar topics and how best to offer them to you. Please take this brief survey and let us know your what you’d like.

MIT’s Bokode: A Tiny Barcode Replacement That’s Chockablock With Data

Posted Thursday, July 30th, 2009

MIT scientists have devised a new coding standard that can be read from digital cameras, and will be used in everything from augmented reality to motion capture.

Bokode

Barcodes are tremendously useful, but they’re also exceedingly dumb: They provide information only to the person with the scanner. These days, we expect mountains of information about our products, from the exact place they came from, to how safe they are and their carbon footprint. So MIT researchers have developed a new standard, called Bokode, which would enable you to use your phone to access a slew of info about a product on the shelf. It’s the tiny, lit hole you see in the center of the image above, amidst all the current barcode versions. Read full story:
