SCORE Celebrates 45 Years of Volunteer Service to America’s Entrepreneurs

SCORE celebrates 45 years of volunteer service to help small businesses nationwide start up, grow and succeed. This year, SCORE reached a new milestone, helping 8.5 million SCORE Counselors to America's Small Businessclients since 1964. Nationally, SCORE offers free and confidential business mentoring and low-cost workshops to more than 350,000 people each year.

SCORE provides a tremendous value to America’s economy. SCORE helps create more than 25,000 new jobs each year, based on an impact study of SBA Entrepreneurship Education resources. One in seven clients creates a new job. SCORE also helped create 19,732 new small businesses in 2007, according to an SBA report sent to Congress.

To help small businesses during the recession, SCORE launched the “Accelerate Your Success” Campaign. Each month, SCORE offers a new online toolkit with special articles, templates, podcasts and workshops at www.score.org/accelerate. Topics have included sales, management, marketing and growth. In addition, many SCORE offices across the country offer special training and workshops focused on recession topics.

Fellowship Encourages Science Start-ups

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, a private institution devoted to cultivating ideas logo[1] and leadership among entrepreneurs, opened its doors last week to the inaugural class of its Entrepreneurial Postdoctoral Fellows program, spearheading the foundation’s new focus to study the science of start-ups.

“What we want to do is give them exposure to how companies make decisions, specifically to evaluating technologies,” says Sandy Miller, director of Advancing Innovation at the foundation, of the 13 fellows. Each of the postdoctoral researchers, whose expertise range from marine science to biochemistry, received grants to continue their studies and work toward commercializing their proposals into actual start-ups. At the end of the yearlong Inc.com - The Daily Resource for Entrepreneursprogram, the fellows will present their plans to the foundation’s advisory panel of experts, which will guide the hopeful entrepreneurs on the next course of action. Shrunken EDAWN back to core mission — jobs, jobs, jobs

A “save the date” e-mail for the annual Directions economic forecasting event distributed last week was noteworthy in at least one respect:EDAWN: Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada

The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada won’t be among the lead organizers of the big annual event on Feb. 10.

Faced with a budget that’s been cut in half, fewer staff and an urgent need to battle the 13 percent jobless rate in the Reno-Sparks area, EDAWN is focused entirely on recruitment and retention of employers.

“It’s about the core mission. We gotta get jobs created,” says Chuck Alvey, the president and chief executive officer of the Reno-based economic development group.

Five of the eight staff members of spend EDAWN most of their days talking with prospective new companies or looking for ways to keep existing employers from leaving the area. The other three staff handle support responsibilities. Read more:

Obama To Increase Loans, Credit To Small Businesses

After an immense financial bailout for big banks on Wall Street, small businesses will finally get the stimulus they’ve been asking for, said President Obama in a speech last week.Inc.com - The Daily Resource for Entrepreneurs
The announcement, made at Landover, Maryland-based Metropolitan Archives, a family-owned paper records storage company, discussed the administration’s initiative to stimulate the economy by increasing loan access to small businesses. The president said he hopes to accomplish this by increasing the size of Small Business Administration loans and boosting credit to community banks – “winding down” the Troubled Asset Relief Assistance (TARP) to major banks and funneling those resources to small businesses.
