Army to build geothermal plant at Hawthorne Army Depot
The U.S. Army announced plans to build a 30-megawatt geothermal power plant at the Hawthorne Army Depot designed to supply all the complex’s electricity needs. Additionally, clean surplus electricity will be available from the plant to sell on the open grid when it is completed, as projected, in late 2012, the Army said in a news release.One megawatt is enough to power 800 homes, and according to the release, the sale of surplus electricity could bring in an estimated $631,000 a year, or $13.5 million over 25 years.
