Gathering Genius event gathers support for international science fair

Posted Thursday, November 20th, 2008

When Gathering Genius formed in 2006, its founders — supporters of encouraging Nevada’s student participation in the sciences — hoped to bid on bringing an international science fair to the state someday. The process, similar to bidding on the Olympics, was expected to take several attempts, but Nevada lucked out on its first try.

On Tuesday, representatives from the academic community, government officials, business leaders and members of the media convened at Desert Research Institute for a reception to kick off the 2009 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which will take place May 10-16, 2009 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. NCET is a proud sponsor of the fair.

The event, which will bring more than 1,600 of the world’s brightest high school students to Reno, is an impressive undertaking. Approximately 6,000 visitors are expected to attend, bringing with them an estimated $6.6 million in tourism dollars, according to the Reno Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority. Supporting the event will be more than 1,000 judges, 500 volunteers and 150 interpreters. Read full story:
