HUBZone Government Contracting for Small Businesses – May 26

U.S. Small Business Certifications help to limit competition for small businesses pursuing Federal government contracting. The Historically Underutilized Business Zones (HUBZone) certification program helps small businesses who employ staff who live in a HUBZone. Engineering Students Showcase High-Tech Inventions During Senior Design Competition May 13

WHAT: Students from the UNLV Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering will put their undergraduate education to the test when they showcase year-long, commercially viable projects designed to solve everyday challenges at the spring 2011 Senior Design Competition.10th Anniversary UNLV Senior Design Awards

WHEN: Friday, May 13, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
All projects will be on display for the duration of the event, with a scheduled break from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: Cox Pavilion Concourse at UNLV

DETAILS: The Senior Design Competition is free and open to the public. With thousands of dollars in prize money on the line, the competition introduces senior engineering students to the spirit of entrepreneurship and the benefits of commercial application. Local industry representatives judge projects developed by students in the electrical, mechanical and civil engineering departments.

Nevada Industry Excellence will present a workshop of lean visual controls and communications May 12. This workshop is provided for employers who want to implement Visual Communimaking™ in the workplace. The workshop offers an overview of theNevada Industry Excellence importance of examining the new workforce, looking at strategies to better communicate, and learning about the principles of Visual Communimaking™. It also takes a look at cultural traits that are influencing communication on the job and impacting performance results tied to processing, quality, errors and rework, and overall productivity.

This workshop is the first step in a process of assisting a company that strives to enhance internal communication in the workplace. It is a holistic approach to communication, coaching and developing the skills of the workforce. It also helps employees feel more integrated into a company in which Lean Enterprise efforts are being applied. TMA Nevada presents a “power house panel” discussion May 18 to discuss Las Vegas future business prospects. 

Panelists:

Richard Pérez-FeriaRichard Pérez-Feria is the Editor-in-Chief of VEGAS INC as well as Business Editor of Greenspun Media Group. Previously, he was COO, Editor-in-Chief of PLANETASTIC, a Web development company Richard co-owned where he worked on celebrity and sports websites. Richard was formerl y the Editor-in-Chief of Time Inc’s People en Espaol, the nation’s largest and most important magazine for Hispanics. He’s an award-winning Editor-in-Chief for magazines and websites.

Robert LangRobert E. Lang
An urban planning and policy expert, Robert Lang focuses on suburban studies, demographic and spatial analysis, economic development, metropolitan governance, transportation, the “built environment,” and the Intermountain West. He is a professor of sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, co-director of Brookings Mountain West and director of The Lincy Institute.

Fred MosslerFred Mossler of Zappos.com, Inc.
Fred joined us in 1999 and was recently promoted to the position of “No Title” from Senior VP of Merchandising because we couldn’t think of a title for him. His “No Title” position enables him to oversee a variety of departments within Zappos.com, Inc. and is an officer of Zappos Merchandising.
