Local soda makers hope product makes a splash

Frank Napolitan and Paul Vultaggio were having dinner with their families at an Italian restaurant in Las Vegas when it occurred to them that there were no Italian sodas available to complement the meal.

A citrus beverage with carbonated water is often served with meals in Italy, but, despite the large number of Italian restaurants in Las Vegas, Napolitan and Vultaggio could not find a similar product here.

Both are longtime Las Vegas residents and are familiar with the local market. Vultaggio started out selling shirts at kiosks in casinos and Napolitan, a graduate of Western High School, has worked in the construction industry for most of his career.

Both are Italian-Americans and they wanted a beverage that would bring the flavors they experienced in Italy to this country. Read full story:

Plant that assembles solar thermal mirrors opens near McCarran

Las Vegas could become the hub of the nation’s solar thermal power manufacturing industry -- or not.

Legislative problems, regulatory issues and competition from other cities cloud forecasts about the future of solar thermal power and Southern Nevada’s potential role in that future, analysts said Monday at the opening of a solar power assembly plant. Read full story:

Energizing our future

Nevadans are independent by nature. It is a value we hold dear and that newcomers crave. One area in which we have lost our independence is in energy consumption. Nevadans spend $9 billion to $12 billion per year to purchase coal, natural gas and gasoline/diesel. The time is right for us to begin to divest ourselves from dependence on petroleum and to invest in clean energy. The political climate, the economic climate and Greater Reno-Tahoe’s clean energy natural resources make this the ideal time and place to develop geothermal, solar and wind energy. Read more:

Clark County School District going high-tech

Clark County School Board members, get ready for your close-ups.In preparation for the switch to live video broadcasting of Clark County School Board meetings, Vegas PBS staff members have been taping the board at work so they can make recommendations. Producer/directors Mark Williams, left, and Kevin Robinson work the equipment that will be used to record the meetings. The School District has spent about $125,000 on equipment for the chamber and another $12,000 in staff time on the project, which goes live for the first time in August.

After lengthy delays, the School Board plans to begin broadcasting its meetings live on the Internet beginning with the start of the academic year in August.

Plans are also in the works to air reruns on one of the two educational channels shared by Vegas PBS, UNLV and CSN. Read more:
