Reno company serves power distribution internationally

Posted Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Server Technology Inc., which manufactures equipment cabinet power distribution, has photocreated a niche on the world stage from its Reno base of operation. Supplying its product to major corporate clients such as Wells Fargo, Yahoo and Goldman Sachs, the company in 2000 moved to Northern Nevada from Sunnyvale, Calif., because the landlord at its 10,000-square-foot facility was going to raise the rent 500 percent.

Server Technology brought 30 of its 33 employees along and built a 30,000-square-foot facility in south Reno to suit its needs.

“We were able to build something that better matched our expectations of what our company was capable of,” said founder and CEO Carrel Ewing, who is an engineer.

Server Technology was recently named “Technology Company of the Year” at the inaugural NCET Awards.

Gathering Genius event gathers support for international science fair

Posted Thursday, November 20th, 2008

When Gathering Genius formed in 2006, its founders — supporters of encouraging Nevada’s student participation in the sciences — hoped to bid on bringing an international science fair to the state someday. The process, similar to bidding on the Olympics, was expected to take several attempts, but Nevada lucked out on its first try.

On Tuesday, representatives from the academic community, government officials, business leaders and members of the media convened at Desert Research Institute for a reception to kick off the 2009 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which will take place May 10-16, 2009 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. NCET is a proud sponsor of the fair.

The event, which will bring more than 1,600 of the world’s brightest high school students to Reno, is an impressive undertaking. Approximately 6,000 visitors are expected to attend, bringing with them an estimated $6.6 million in tourism dollars, according to the Reno Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority. Supporting the event will be more than 1,000 judges, 500 volunteers and 150 interpreters. Read full story:
