Nevada could become the leading geothermal energy producer in the coming years if growth and production trends continue on their current trajectories. Nevada’s 86 planned or developing geothermal power plants have the potential add up to 3.68 gigawatts of geothermal power to Nevada’s energy portfolio.

Fourteen geothermal power plants are in latter stages of development in the state. These projects would create an estimated 1,400 construction jobs in Nevada once groundbreaking has occurred. Read full story:

MJ’s Pizzeria got its start as a brainstorm by a team led by James Blood, a Truckee Meadows Community College student, during NCET’s annual Donald W. Reynolds Governor’s Cup Business Plan Competition in the spring of 2009. The proposal: A restaurant with a menu that would include vegan and gluten-free pizzas along with more traditional offerings.

Judges thought the idea was good enough that the team won a $5,000 award for third place in the competition among collegians statewide. Read full story:

The system will be designed to be quickly transported to disaster areas to provide life-saving power and water. The fact that it’s designed to operate on clean solar energy also means that relief supply efforts can dramatically reduce the fuel they transport and focus instead on food and medicine.

"Everyone thought we were a fad," Young said of his industry, craft brewing, and his own endeavor, Great Basin Brewing Co., which begun in 1993 in Sparks.

Now 17 years later, more than 1,000 brew pubs operate across the U.S., he said, "and this little tiny joint in Sparks is No. 35 in volume."

By month’s end, Great Basin will add another site to its map when Young and his co-owner wife, Bonda, open their second brewery/restaurant across from Meadowood Mall at McCarran Boulevard and South Virginia Street. Read full story:

The University’s engineering department will bring together experts from multiple disciplines and integrate a number of technologies to develop a solar-thermal power generating system. The Desert Research Institute will assist with the project.

“We’re combining mechanical, thermal, electrical, advanced composites and materials and chemical engineering with renewable energy principles into the design and testing of a lab-scale system,” said Mano Misra, primary researcher on the project. Misra is also the University’s Renewable Energy Center director and a materials engineering professor.

“The test system will initially focus on storage to generate about 40 to 60 kilowatts,” he said. “The transportable system has a number of important applications since it produces both thermal and electric energy. Electricity and water production are crucial needs in remote and disaster locations.

“Today, these needs are usually met with diesel generators. The transportation of diesel fuel is difficult and very expensive. This system will be inexpensive, efficient and renewable.”

In disaster situations, such as Haiti, the system can be quickly transported to the area to provide life-saving power and water. Further, since the system operates on clean solar energy, the relief supply efforts can dramatically reduce the fuel they transport and can instead focus on more important food and medicine.
