Central spark: Viewpoint shift can ignite business

 

 

 

Pressure runs high for businesses to grow big and think big. But chasing hits means facing risks, which invites inertia, a trio of authors argues. No-fail cultures may mean no one willing to try anything.

Jeanne Liedtka, Robert Rosen and Robert Wiltbank say the companies can improve their chances to expand by finding leaders who will try small ventures, work quickly, and adjust if plans falter. Their book “The Catalyst: How You Can Become and Extraordinary Growth Leader” offers tips to unearth risk-hungry mavericks.

The writers speak from experience. Lietdka, a professor at the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business, began her career with Boston Consulting Group. Rosen is chairman and chief executive officer of Healthy Companies International. And Wiltbank is a partner in Buerk Dale Victor, a Seattle venture capital fund.
