Mining school marks a century
John Mackay is one of Nevada’s great rags-to-riches stories, but his family’s saga has extra dashes of salty intrigue, from the ghost of a woman believed to haunt the Reno college named after him to the granddaughter disowned because of the man she loved.
Toss in a controversy over a statue by the artist who carved Mount Rushmore, and you have part of the rich history behind the Mackay School of Mines.
Founded in 1908, the school is celebrating its centennial with numerous events open to the public. Read more:
