New Reno Arch light bulbs just the start of energy saving plan
The Reno Arch became a symbol of the city’s $20 million commitment to energy conservation Tuesday night when the switch was flipped on 2,076 energy-efficient light bulbs.
“This is super. This is super,” Mayor Bob Cashell, who changed the last bulb, told about 200 people at a ceremony to spark the new light-emitting diodes. “I think these things are brighter.”
Updating the Reno Arch was intended to publicize a city program to spend up to $20 million on renewable energy and energy conservation projects in the next two years.
The city has hired APS Energy Services of Tempe, Ariz., for the work, using about $1 million a year to be saved in energy costs during the 15 years in the contract. That’s based on reducing the city’s $5 million annual power bill by 20 percent. Read full story:
