Q&D fleet to use biodiesel fuel

Q&D Construction, one of the largest construction companies in Northern Nevada, is going green.Oiler Dan Choat changes filters on Monday in one of Q&D Construction’s biodiesel bulldozers at the Legends project in Sparks.

A team of 55 technicians is spending the winter months replacing parts and fluids on heavy equipment so the company’s fleet can run on biodiesel fuel, which 20 percent is derived from soy and vegetable oil, said Chief Executive Officer Joe Serpa.

“When I first went to work back in the 1970s for Helms (Construction Company), you would see a string of scrapers sitting out there idling, and there was quite a pall of smoke they would leave in the air,” Serpa said. “Whether there is global warming or RGJ.comnot, that can’t be good for anybody. So, if you eliminate that and it cost you a few pennies more per gallon or a few thousand dollars more for an engine when you buy a newer machine that will burn this stuff, it is worth it in the long run.” Read full story:
