Reno Technology Goes Hollywood in "Zodiac"

Reno is a long way from Hollywood, but that hasn’t stopped a local company’s technology from being used in a major feature film.

If the movie “Zodiac,” which is being released in theaters nationally today, looks a little different from a traditional film, it might be because of Reno-based S.Two Corp.’s Digital Field Recorder, which allows movies to be recorded digitally without tape or 35 mm film.

The film, which is about the Zodiac killer and the media circus that surrounded the 1960s Bay Area murders, is believed by industry experts to be the first full-length movie to be shot completely without tape or film.

Now, S.Two, which opened for business in south Reno in 2003, is hoping the movie is a hit at more than just the box office, said Chris Romine, the company’s president.

“This is our breakthrough,” Romine said. “We’ve done more than a dozen feature films worldwide, but this is the first one that has been done by a major Hollywood director. So, there is already a buzz on the streets in Hollywood waiting for this film to come out, and they are going to be critically comparing it with 35mm film.
