Sierra Pacific dedicates new 541-megawatt power plant east of Reno

Sierra Pacific Power Co. moves closer to self sufficiency when it flips the ceremonial switch to fire up its new 541-megawatt, natural-gas-fired plant in Tracy.”It’s a certainty that we have the capacity to meet our needs,” Roberto Denis, vice president for energy supply at parent company Sierra Pacific Resources, said of the new plant 17 miles east of Sparks to be formally dedicated almost three years after its approval from state regulators. The combined-cycle, $467 million generating station will be paid for over time by the Reno-based utility’s customers through an average 9.2 percent rate increase that started July 1.
