PBS Reno Launches Camp Curiosity

For local children, staying home is not a quarantine; it’s a free ticket to PBS Reno’s Camp Curiosity!

We know it can be a scary time for families as normal routines are disrupted due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Parents and caregivers alike are navigating new territory when it comes to caring for their children. Making sure they are in a safe and fun environment throughout the day can be difficult. PBS Reno has created an interactive, at-home “camp” based around PBS educational programming to help alleviate some of this stress. Camp Curiosity will support parents with easy-to-access learning resources that can be used at home and make happy campers of our region’s children!

After each PBS KIDS program on our main channel and shows like Nova and Nature, PBS Reno will create a locally-produced piece that connects viewers engaging hands-on activities that directly relate to the program. Camp Curiosity will leverage PBS LearningMedia: an immense, free online PBS resource that provides hands-on activities, further reading, and online learning to complement broadcast media. Numerous activities are also available on the PBS KIDS app.

Camp Curiosity will also include interactive challenges and activities children can participate in through our on-air programming. The first will be a drawing contest, where children illustrate their favorite PBS character. Drawings will be featured live on-air and on our social media channels. Children can submit their drawings via social media, email or through our website. We are working with sponsors and partners to create new interactive experiences to tie-in over the next few weeks.

PBS Reno is providing a hotline to help parents and caregivers access these learning resources, as well as other online resources, like county libraries. Can’t find a lesson online? Don’t know how to install the PBS KIDS app? Call the PBS Reno Camp Curiosity Hotline at 775-600-0537 and learn how to access these free resources.

Camp Curiosity will start on-air and online on Monday, March 23, 2020 and will run as long as Nevada schools are closed. For more information on how to get involved with Camp Curiosity, contact Peter Stanton at 775-600-0559 or pstanton@pbsreno.org. Help PBS Reno make this an exciting and meaningful experience for our community’s PreK -12 students and their families.
